Profitable UK dairy farmers achieve competitiveness through efficiency gains and meeting the challenging needs of the market by producing quality food, whilst minimising their impact on resources and the environment. The best measure of economic efficiency at the farm level is net margin per litre of milk produced. This give the ability of capturing the effects of both technical, cost and scale efficiency, and is therefore an attractive high level benchmark to use across production systems.
The project is developing an internet based service for dairy farmers and their approved advisors to manage dairy farm performance. This will consist of three elements:
- A sophisticated farm management tool, where users will be able to record a structured set of data which will be stored online and report physical and financial inputs to the business;
- Weekly, monthly and annual analysis for real time performance reviews;
- A web service to provide an analytical tool for users to carry out their own analysis.
